Author of maryuu

Behind the MarYuu trademark stands Marju Liigand, an Estonian designer. Coming from a family of artistic ancestors, she is a graduate of the Estonian Academy of Arts and a long-standing member of the Estonian Artists' Association.

Marju is a well-known designer of trade fair stands. She has given shape to the expositions shown in many countries and in diverse fields, from articles of food to ship building. She has also been active as an interior decorator.

For as long as she can remember, knitting has been her secret passion.  Marju's first public appearance – a solo exhibition of knitwear designed and produced by herself – took place in Tallinn in the early 1990s. The display earned a warm reception both at home and in Finland. Now, with her focus still on the basic profession, she has managed to complete a colourful collection of cardigans, sweaters, dresses and plaids of original design.

MISSION STATEMENT

MarYuu knitwear items are entirely handmade, mostly of woollen yarn, with additions of colours and materials to achieve the necessary design and texture. The knitwear design is Marju Liigand's original creation.

Marju's passion is playing with colours. Although her favourite colour is black – bottomless and perfect – she does not use black in her knitwear. On the contrary, she combines all kinds of bright colours into an imaginative whole.  She draws inspiration from her surroundings: gobelin tapestry, nature, antiquities, and from Estonian folk art – an inexhaustible source of patterns and colours.

Knitting is a creative activity, almost as painting is. Some pieces of knitting are created according to an elaborate layout, some are completed in a burst of inspiration with no fixed result envisaged. Sometimes, while knitting, the initial design would change beyond recognition. Thus, each piece of knitting is a unique work of art, comparable in every respect with the products of haute couture.

Beautiful, elegant and stylish knitwear is timeless, not influenced by weather, mood or fashion.
